The Public Quarter includes most of the major temples and public buildings of Pavis, including the Pavis Temple itself.

Knowledge Temple

P-22

Referred to as the Knowledge Temple by the Lunars, who want it to be shared between Lhankor Mhy and Irripi Ontor, the Lunar knowledge god.

Lhankor Mhy temples are supposed to have three wings, echoing the truth rune - the temple in Pavis has never quite had the funds to realise this, and the third wing is still just used as a corral for temple beasts.  The rest of the temple is the normal Lhankor Mhy combination of classrooms, libraries and sleeping quarters, filled with misfiled or mislaid books and scrolls, and with plenty of nooks and crannies for scheming and plotting in.  There is something about the Lord of Knowledge that means his followers seem to spend a lot of time trying to outsmart each other - outsiders sometimes wonder if that is how Lhankor Mhy is actually worshipped.

Now that Irripi Ontor is added to the mix as well, the number of factions amongst the priesthood is getting unmanageable.  The cult of Irripi Ontor is building their own temple-library at the rear of the Lhankor Mhy temple, and in the meantime are trying to steal as many scrolls as possible from Lhankor Mhy in order to stock the library.

Lhankhor Mhy initiates are also noted for their sophistry.  Humakti are truthful because their honour requires it.  Lhankor Mhy initiates are required to be truthful as well, but for them the truth is like a sword - narrow and slippery.  They take great pride in being able to argue any position without ever uttering a strict falsehood, but meanwhile having effective averred that black is white.  Debating competitions are very popular in the Lhankor Mhy temple.

The knowledge temple offers several services:

Market Administration Building

P-1

This building holds clerks who are responsible for issuing and checking permits, inspecting shops in Pavis, and maintaining the standard weights and measures that are used in Pavis and Pavis county, under the aegis of the Etyries cult (who were handed responsibility for this from the Issaries cult with the Lunar occupation).  The Issaries cult chafes at this loss of influence (and income), but there is nothing they can do about this without risking any more loss of privileges, so they just grumble gently about the good old days.  More frustrated are the shopkeepers and tavern-keepers of Pavis, who were used to a fairly laisez-faire attitude from the Issaries cult, and are now caught up in the mountains of paperwork and permits that the Lunar bureaucracy seems to thrive on.

Orlanth Temple

P-21

The Orlanth temple is a single storey building around a large open courtyard, appropriate for an air-god.  Orlanth Rex is not worshipped in Pavis, only Orlanth Thunderous and Orlanth Adventurous.

It has been largely closed by the Lunar Authorities since the start of the occupation as it is regarded as a potential center of resistance to Lunar rule.  They have imposed their own candidate, Faltikus the Good as High Priest, and most Orlanthi in Pavis now regard it as being completely compromised, and assume that the Lunars are keeping tabs on everyone who now turns up for the sanctioned Windsday services.  As a result, there is now a shrine to Orlanth in the Ernalda Temple, which many Orlanthi use instead.

Rune Masters

High Priest: Faltikus the Good

Storm Voices: Govoran the Magnificent

Wind Lords: Krogar Wolfhelm

Holy Days

Holy Days are often not celebrated, or if they are celebrated under Faltikus the Good in a half-hearted way that means that Worship rolls are made to 75% of normal skill level and rune point recovery is one less than normal.  They are directed towards Orlanth Thunderous rather than Orlanth Adventurous.

Windsday of any week is a holy day (rarely celebrated in the Pavis temple, but underground worship ceremonies may take place (underground in the sense of secret - obviously no Orlanthi would actually worship underground))

Windsday of Movement week of each season is a seasonal holy day

Windsday of Movement week of Storm Season is the high holy day celebrating the birth of Orlanth

Services

The Orlanth temple no longer offers normal services.

Training

Training no longer takes place at the Orlanth temple.  However the loyal Wind Lord and Storm Voices of the temple will offer training to lay members or initiates in private in their own dwellings, provided it doesn't come to the attention of the authorities.   Krogar Wolfhelm openly teaches sword at the Humakt Temple, relying on his status to dare the Lunars to stop him.

Training cost depends on the current level of skill of the trainee.  Skill costs are quoted as 3 or 4 numbers separated by dashes.  Each is the cost in Lunars for a week's training, which allows for one skill increase roll.  First is if current skill is 0-25%, second is if current skill is 26-50%, third is if skill is 51-75%, and fourth (if shown) is if skill is 76%+ (not all skills can be trained above 75%).

Seven Mothers Temple

P-14

The newest temple in Pavis and finished in record time by the Lunars is this impressive new tample to the Seven Mothers - the main missionary cult of the Lunar Empire.  It brings together all seven beings who acted to bring about the birth of the Red Goddess - Danfive Xaron (the Bridge for the Seeker), Deezola (the Binder Within), Irripi Ontor (the Brown Man), Jakaleel the Witch (the Spindle Hag), Teelo Norri (Young Life), Yanafal Tarnils (Ram and Warrior) and She who Waits.

Of these, Irripi Ontor, Teelo Norri and Yanafal Tarnils have temples fully dedicated to them elsewhere in Pavis, but still also have shrines here in the Seven Mothers Temple.

The purpose of the Seven Mothers cult is to convert people to the Lunar faith.  The teachings of the Seven Mothers are regarded as a primer in the Lunar Way - easy for the outsider to understand and accept.  Once initiated into the cult of the Seven Mothers, many will go on to explore the Lunar Way more deeply through other cults.

Trade Temple

Trade Temple

P-15

The trade temple occupies the eastern half of the south side of the Founder's Market.  It is a long two storey building - the ground floor is fronted with a columned arcade, behind which are a series of shops that can be rented by Issaries or Etyries Initiates or Rune-Priests for a period of a season.  At each end is a staircase which ascends to the upper floor which is mainly taken up with the temple of Issaries itself (including a recently added shrine to Etyries).  The rest of the upper floor is accommodation for resident and visiting Rune-Priests.  The temple is a large columned room where deals can be struck - established merchants in Pavis each have their own desk here which contains paper and draft contracts etc.  The Issaries Temple also acts as a banking house - you can deposit valuables here for a small seasonal fee (they are stored in a strong room in the cellar) or borrow money if you need to and can strike the right interest rate with someone willing to lend.

The whole building is protected by a permanent Market spell.

Markets

Markets are held in the Founder's Market in front of the temple on Wildday of each week.  Caravans normally try and coordinate their arraval for this day because of the extra protection that the cult gives.   The Wildday of Movement week is a larger seasonal market which will attract buyers and sellers from all of Pavis County and even beyond

The priests of the temple will cast Market spells over the whole market on these occasions.

Holy Days

Wildday of each week of each season is a Holy Day and market day.

Wildday of Movement week of each season is a Seasonal Holy Day, and large market day.

Wildday of each week of Sacred Time are the High Holy Days of the cult.  These are markets, but normally not big ones because members of other cults are normally too involved in their own cult rituals.

Services

The Trade temple offers several services:

  • All buying and selling is blessed if it takes place under the protection of the Issaries cult.  Most shopkeepers in Pavis are Lay Members of Issaries even if they are also members of other cults, and taking a stall in the market or a shop in the Trade temple itself requires that you be a Lay Member of Issaries (preference is given to Initiates, Trader Princes or Merchant Priests though).
  • Temples of Issaries act as bankers - they will store valuables for a fee, and can also issue letters of credit which can be redeemed at another Issaries temple following a suitable Divination.

Becoming a Lay Member of Issaries requires the purchase of a clay statuette of Issaries from the Trade Temple, which is then displayed in your shop or stall to show that you are under the protection of Issaries.  The cost of this depends on a number of factors, including the whim of the priest, the demand for lay membership and the state of the temple coffers.  Not Barganing for this would be regarded as disrespectful.

The statuette will crumble after a season unless a magic point is used to maintain it once per season.  This needs to take place as part of a commercial transaction, and using the standard Issaries prayer for blessing a purchase.

Training

Training cost depends on the current level of skill of the trainee.  Skill costs are quoted as 3 or 4 numbers separated by dashes.  Each is the cost in Lunars for a week's training, which allows for one skill increase roll.  First is if current skill is 0-25%, second is if current skill is 26-50%, third is if skill is 51-75%, and fourth (if shown) is if skill is 76%+ (not all skills can be trained above 75%).

Initiates can get training at half normal cost.  Lay members can get training in Speak (Tradetalk) for free.
