Sword street in Oldtown

Oldtown is the quarter of Pavis between the Farmer's Quarter and the Temple of Pavis.  It contains some of the oldest buildings in Pavis, and was one of the first settled areas, but most of its original inhabitants then moved to Rich Hill or Downtown.  It is now home to a transient population of recent immigrants and visitors, and most of the rowdier elements of Pavis nightlife, plus those who have been pushed back out of Downtown by the Lunars.

Oldtown Gazetteer

City Mint

O-37

Not to be confused with the Pavis Mint, which is an ancient artefact located in the Rubble, this secure building backs onto the Rubble wall and is linked to the Pavis Temple.  This is the mint where official Pavic currency is struck, using bullion from the city treasury in the Temple of Pavis.  It is obviously a heavily fortified building, both physically and magically.  Many attempts have been made to rob the mint, and the skulls that line the facade show the punishment for those that try.

Geo's New Pavis Inn

O-25

The furthest flung of the Geo's Inns, this is found in the Oldtown Quarter of Pavis, in the small alleyway between Sword Street and Holy Street.  A small looking building on the outside, it's main bar-room is actually below ground and extends under some of the neighbouring buildings.

As would be expected for a branch of Geo's, most of the patrons are staunch Sartarites, and it has become something of a home from home for Sartarite exiles in Pavis.

The food, drink and accommodation are all of the high standard one would expect from any Geo's Inn.  Unexpected visitors are apt to get a cold welcome though, and the sight of a Lunar patrol at either end of the alley can cause a mass exodus through various escape tunnels under neighbouring buildings, most of which are owned by fellow sympathisers.

Gimpys

Location O-39 & O-40

Gimpys is the premier tavern in town for those who make their living by venturing into the Old Rubble in search of ancient artefacts and buried treasure.  It has a strict invitation-only door policy to keep out the riff-raff and hangers-on - only seasoned mercenaries, warriors and venturers get to come into Gimpys.  It is also famous for its stew, which is supposedly produced by a magical artefact looted from the rubble by its three owners, all ex-venturers who were forced to retire after each losing a leg to a chaotic monstrosity in the Rubble.  Healing magic had no effect on these wounds as so they used their treasure to buy an old tavern called the Temple, and run it themselves.

The tavern itself is built against the Rubble wall - it is separated from the street by a large walled courtyard.  The entrance door actually opens onto stairs down to a tunnel which leads under the courtyard and up further stairs into the tavern building - the only access to the courtyard is from the tavern.  Upstairs there are rooms for the proprietors and also others that can be rented by the season.  They will also store the effects of those venturing into the Rubble for a season - if they haven't been claimed by the end of the next season, then Gimpys auction them off to pay for the cost of storage.

In their basement is their other unique feature - their own tunnel under the wall and into the Rubble - it exits next to the Zebra pens.  Venturers can pay to enter or leave the Rubble via this tunnel.

The food, drink and accomodation at Gimpys is all of reasonable quality and fairly priced, which makes it attractive and popular to those who are permitted entry.  The exclusivity makes it a safe place to drink and relax.

Jareen's

O-14

Jareen's provides good accomodation, food and drink.  It is staffed entirely by women, and owned by Jareen herself, who still runs it.  The rumour is that the seed money for it came from a particularly lucrative Rubble expedition, which enabled her to purchase Pavis citizenship and the inn.

Rooms are only rented to women, but men are welcome in the dining room and bar.

Loud Lilina's

O-29

On the south side of Sword Street, this is the rowdiest and lowest-class tavern in Oldtown, but also has the best nightlife.  The drink is cheap, and undrinakable, but many an evening's drinking ends up here because it is usually open later than any other tavern in Oldtown, and by that stage, you don't notice that the drink is undrinkable.

Loud Lilina's is also a good place to do business, as many of the less savoury characters in Pavis tend to frequent it.  However non-humans are not welcome.

Lilina, the patroness, is known for her fishwife's voice, her unwillingness to put up with any kind of harassment from patrons, and her willingness to enforce her wishes with a large soup ladle.  Being barred from Loud Lilina's is a rite of passage in Pavis; fortunately she has a short memory for who she has barred.

Magic Needle

O-4

Clothing and fabrics.

Nan's Breadbox

O-7

The best tavern and one of the longest established in Pavis.  Nan's serves good hearty Sartarite homecooked food and is notable for being arranged as a number of small rooms which gives a more homely feeling, and also provides more privacy than most taverns.  Quite pricey.

Silibar's Fancies

O-3

The rooms and food are only fair, but the range of drinks and the quality are excellent, and this is the primary gaming establishment in Pavis.  Very popular with the young and rich, and with those who hope to fleece them of their riches.  Every Wildday they hold a wrestling competition with good prizes which is a major betting opportunity for the clientele.
